Costumes

To make a character complete a character's clothing and make-up are very important factors. Not only do they need to act the part they need to look the part . Our characters are young, so they need modern stylish clothing so they can appeal to the target audience. At the same time they are in particular friendship groups as well as there own individual personalities. Having certain types of clothing makes them different but the same time similar to other members of their group.

We took inspiration from a classic West Side Story which is also about two gangs.

As you can see in the photograph above each character has a this type of jacket but on a different design or colour. This is really showcasing each individual personality. This technique in a number of films. The reason why it is the same type of jacket is that they live in the same neighbourhood and know the same type of people so in that aspect all the main characters are similar.

As well as going well with the jackets this item of clothing is also very practical when moving to our various shooting locations.

Again this is an practical item of clothing. They also go well with the theme and setting of the film. It is set in a quite rough neighbourhood, and based on two rival gangs and boots are a protective footwear.

Permission

Music Permission

After our research of Soundtracks in Trailers, we decided to include a song called End Credits by Chase and Status featuring Plan B (instrumental). This track has already been used in a video game trailer- F1 2012 as well as in a film called Harry Brown co-starring Plan B himself.

All forms of media are so easily accessible this day and age. In the planning process we emailed for permission via the Chase and status website. I got a link to this site through Vertigo Records one of the record labels producing the song which is based in the UK like Ram Records another producer of the track.

Company Permission

Regarding the making of our film, we used a lot of different companies that make films to feature in our trailer. This made our trailer much more realistic, and therefore more believable. But before we could use these in our trailer, it was important that the company was aware that we cwould use it, as we know many of the companies have copy right, and we didnt want to cause havoc when we posted it on our youtube channel, so what we did was we loged onto the website of each of these companies.

Then we took the email address of the companies and asked for permission.

This way, we knew that the company had an idea that we would be using there signs, and this ensured that we would be able to use it.

Speech

As a group we decided to use a sound track throughout the trailer but we felt that some of our filming will be accompanied best well with some dialogue. I personally felt that it will make the film trailer more authentic, and even before seeing the film the target audience can establish the personality of some characters. Previous research also backed this idea.
Researching around this issue, I found that actually ‘Girl gangs are taking centre stage in a new British film looking at female street violence’ meaning there was a market for our chosen film but also real life media products with the same genre pay close attention to language as this is the key way that they will communicate to the target audience.
This article gives example of how a variety of programmes and films, where the centre target audience are the younger generation. They use langue to appeal to them. For example Top Boy.

Not only what they say but how it said. During our trailer my partner and I try and show conflict, where words need to be spoken in an aggressive tone. As a group we need to assure that our actresses speak in that manner.

Soundtrack

Sound is very important to our trailer. During the making process we need to ensure that there is excellent correlation and relevance with the moving images and the music. As we used more than one track we a used a programme- Mix Pad to merge our music together. It important that I correlated well with our moving images, for a high standard trailer.

Below is a print screen of making the track (with Mix Pad):

ALSO
Windows Live Movie Maker was also available to use and to construct a timeline for music is very simple. We made a test run of the soundtrack on this software

During the trailer the will be sections of dialogue over the track.

Soundtrack Research

Majority of trailers today have a voiceover trying to sell the new release to their target audience. For my trailer my group chose to use a track which I feel more effective for the type of film we are selling, I personally feel that using fewer words as possible is more effective especially if the theme is serious. Here is a perfect example from one of the saw trailers:

The music speaks itself setting a tense mood for the film. The little words featured it adds to to the tension and suspense made by the soundtrack. I would want something similar to this in my trailer.

Using our own knowledge of music and the help of youbtube we thought of the song that fitted our film and also extra other sounds and music that we could mix together with the song to add that extra impact. For example screams- we looked at the famous 'wilhelm scream' which had been featured in a number of hollwood films since the 1950s but found that this did not fit well with our pictured trailer. We decided to either create our own or find and alternative.

For the opening 18 seconds we found a piece of music off youtube to set the scene then we agreed to use a song by Chase and Status featuring Plan B called End Credits for the majority of the trailer we picked this song as it compliments the action of the film, even though we are using the instrumental the words tell a story similar to our film choice; finally we wanted to end with a scream. Sections of the trailer then may be scripted words from the cast.

Cast

When taking these shots, I took inspiration from a similar genre of film - Kidulthood/Adulthood. Even in the film there is a rivalry between the characters they are still shot in one group. I feel that this is because in the course of the film we get to know and begin to like them as individuals and are key to the film. I have taken this idea and fitted it in with my own trailer and theatrical cover. The picture shows the two rival groups- Erith: Fisola, Sharnell,Pav Townely: Jamilia, Hannah, Emma. But they are pictured in one group because they are key to the events of the film. Each person was told what to wear.

Pav is a key character because, as a result of two gangs confrontation she is seriously hurt. She is very smart not just academically but also street wise. As pav has gone through alot with her dad leaving her and her family at a young age and her mother dying she does not like getting involved in the trouble that surrounds her in her neighbourhood even though they she has personality clashes with Jamila and her group she would be the one to walk away.

Sisters - Pav and Ravi their single mother has died and now older sister Ravi  now has to take up the motherly role in their home. The photograph show that they are united however the black hand rail cuts in between them which is significant as a series of events in the film are cut them apart as the Pav the younger sister is brutally attacked. The blue background represents sadness and the name of the film 'Affliction' which means pain that is brought upon someone.

Fisola has leadership qualities and is a natural born leader. Unlike Jamilia she does not have a overpowering personality to make other do what she says. Due to the fact she speaks sense her close friends follow her but most importantly look up to her. She is very close to Sharnell and Pav and they are generally closer than the other group.

Sharnell is very intimidating to people who do not know her and does come across as rude to their rival group. To those who are close to her she is comical. She looks up to Fisola and admires how smart her two closet friends are. They are more like family to her.

Jamilia Has a very overpowering personality, and comes off very scary and intimidating even to her closest friends. Around the neighbourhood she is known as the typical 'bad girl' and gets the rest of her gang to do her dirty work. Under all this she is actually caring but not having a stable home, situations has lead her to the person she seems to be.

Hannah is a very innocent and quiet character. She is vital as we see the story from her point of view. She never wants to get into trouble but as Jamilia is in her life she gets herself into difficult situations and the majority of the trouble she gets in is because of her.

Emma is very close to Jamilia, but is also  influenced by her. The pair have been friends since they were young and she feels that it is her being loyal to back Jamilia no matter what, however she does worry.

When choosing the characters both me and my working partner had to think who had available and what part would suit them to make the best out of the trailer. All chosen actors are reliable and some do have experience in acting. Throughout the period of doing this task we had to keep communicating with the actresses to confirm dates of shooting the trailer and photo taking. To add communication is key so that the actresses will know what to wear as this is an important component for the whole product. This will be done through phones and social networking sites.
